Article: What's the (Difference) Between Bookkeeping and Accounting

July 7, 2017

This is the question we all get asked, more than once. To simplify it, I compare the relationship between bookkeepers and accountants to that between nurses and doctors. Here's another way to look at it:

Unfortunately for the victims in this article, they were on the criminal end of the worst in the spectrum. Most often the bad bookkeeper is simply ill educated or inexperienced. Still, this article should serve as a warning, and a reminder, to do your due diligence when hiring someone who will take care of your money.

Article: Do You Want a Bookkeeping Client or a Bookkeeping Job?

June 13,  2013

As I often do, I read a blog post by a colleague today and she wrote about something we should all consider doing before taking on a new client: having a conversation and finding out if, as a client and service provider, are we a good fit to work together? I know, nothing about having a client or a job, but it got your attention, didn't it?

Article: Is Your Bookkeeper a Trusted Advisor, or Simply a Keeper of Your Books?

September 13, 2012

As part of my compulsive nature, partly to keep informed as well as to help others, I belong to a number of discussion forums and receive emails daily regarding policy development, practice management, software tips and work arounds and tax updates from various levels of government.

One arrived in my inbox today that I thought was great for small business owners. I have included a link to the original article below.

It discusses how your bookkeeper or accountant should be a vital part of your team; a trusted expert just like your marketing or IT manager.

Enjoy!

Announcement: New Tool for Professional Bookkeepers

October 11, 2012

Over the last 10 years that I have been an independent consultant and professional bookkeeper I have collected documents, forms, articles, guidebooks and other pieces of information from various sources. They ranged from fillable time sheets (courtesy of my husband and business partner), new client info forms, government forms and guidebooks (including the vital Employee or Self Employed RC4110), engagement agreements, notice to reader templates and articles like "How to Fire a Client with Grace and Dignity".

I have also been searching the internet for more useful documents, some to replace ones I had that I felt were inadequate or not appropriate for use in Canada, others because it was one I didn't have and had need of, and others to use that required minor amendments. I thought I could find a comprehensive kit to either fill in gaps in my own, or to replace it. No such luck. However, I was inspired.

Until a few weeks ago I had not collected all of my useful papers in one place. But when I did, holy cow! I didn't realize how many useful documents I had! I asked a few friends, colleagues and accountants I know whether they had something similar. If not, would a collection of documents like what I had amassed be useful? If yes, would they *pay* for one and how much would they be willing to part with?

Most said: no they didn't have such an arsenal of paper, yes my collected effort could be useful, and yes they would pay for it. Hmmmm, I thought. I might be onto something!

If you are a bookkeeper reading this blog, and you are interested in seeing a partial table of contents and a sample of some of the articles and forms, please drop me a note on the Contact Me page.

The toolbox comes in a white binder, fully indexed and includes a CD with soft copies of all templates and forms that can be customized with your logo and/or company name. Several of the government forms are fillable, such as the T4 and T4 Summary.
